MacBook fold animation for macOS

1. What MacBend does

MacBend is a native macOS menu-bar utility that renders a visual fold-style transition when a compatible MacBook display opens or closes. It is designed to bring an iPhone Duo-style open-and-close feeling to MacBook hardware.

The effect is visual only. MacBend does not change the physical hinge, display hardware, macOS authentication process or Apple firmware.

2. How the fold animation works

MacBend reads lid-angle changes from a compatible built-in sensor and maps that movement to the visual close progress. As the lid opens again, the effect reverses with it.

The current display image supplies the source for the transition, while the renderer keeps the effect local. MacBend does not export a video or image during normal operation.

macOS 14.0 or later.
A MacBook with a built-in display.
A compatible Apple lid-angle sensor that reports a valid angle.

MacBend checks the sensor at runtime rather than using a published model whitelist. Apple Silicon and Intel compatibility are not separately documented or guaranteed; the trial lets you evaluate the current version on your device.

External-only displays and clamshell setups without the built-in panel are disabled by default. Compatibility can also depend on macOS APIs, permissions and operating-system behavior.

4. Why Screen Recording permission is required

MacBend uses macOS Screen Recording permission so ScreenCaptureKit can provide the built-in display frames needed to render the local fold effect. On first launch, enable MacBend under Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, then quit and reopen the signed MacBend app.

macOS controls this permission. Revoking it can prevent the visual effect from functioning; MacBend does not use it to record a movie or send your screen to a server.

5. Installation

Start from the MacBend download control.
Open MacBend.dmg from your Downloads folder.
Drag the MacBend app into your Applications folder.
Open MacBend and complete the Screen Recording permission step.

The published installer must be a consistently signed macOS app bundle for Screen Recording permission to register reliably.

6. Privacy and network behavior

Screen frames are processed transiently and entirely on your Mac. MacBend does not intentionally record, save, upload or cloud-process those frames, and licensing requests never include screen content.

The trial and licence service may process pseudonymous device and licence metadata, trial times, activation status and network/IP information for verification and rate limiting. Internet access is required to register or recheck the trial and for initial licence activation.

Each purchase supplies three separate keys for up to three Macs.

8. Controls and limitations

The production app runs from the menu bar and provides a close animation toggle. Turning animation off pauses the effect and stops the capture stream. Advanced calibration, manual progress, visual effect sliders and freeze-frame controls are developer-only tools, not production style presets.

Physical lid occlusion, sleep, lock, wake timing and rapid-close behavior depend on the MacBook hardware and macOS. No result is promised for every MacBook or every current or future macOS release.
